How to Help

As we wait for Marcy's physical healing to manifest, everyone who comes in contact with Marcy wants to help. It's a great testament to the goodness in the people all around us.

None of us feel like we do enough to help Marcy - maybe because she gives us more than we can ever give her.

If you want to do more to help, there are a few ideas listed below. If you have found this page as you were looking for ways to help a friend recently diagnosed with a life threatening disease, consider one or more of these ideas. For the ones that require more than one person (dinners, fundraiser) consider starting the help group that can execute the idea.

Almost all of these ideas came from our friends and family - we didn't ask for them. They came from the loving, creative people around us. As people continue to bless us, we'll keep adding ideas here.

Pray - We welcome and invite your prayers for us. Prayer is what has gotten us this far.

Plant a flower at Flowers for Marcy - our web site where, for a donation online, anyone can plant a (virtual) flower in our (virtual) yard on the web.

I show Marcy the web page of our virtual yard each morning and read her each new message.

Send a Dartsy Card - Help us spread the word about our web site by using our greeting cards - featuring art from our daughter Darcy.

Just download the Word template for free, print on your printer, fold, write a personal message and mail.

Become a Virtual Caregiver - Help Rob stay home with Marcy with financial support. If your circumstances don't allow you to donate cash now, talk with other individuals and companies to see if they can donate goods, services, or cash.

Volunteer for Dinner - Be part of one of our biggest blessings. If you live far from us, there's even a way for you to have dinner delivered.

Shop at Amazon.com for anything you are looking to buy.

Just fill in the item you need in the box on the left and click "Go" - we'll get a referral fee.

iGive If you shop at any of hundreds of stores online through iGive, a percentage of sales goes towards Marcy's care. Click here to learn more and to start.

Buy a Book - Whether you buy a book we've published or click through to amazon.com through our site, money is contributed to Marcy's care.

Bring Your Perk - Almost every job comes with at least one little something extra because you do what you do. It often becomes old and stale to you, but to a person or family in need, it can make their day. See our 5/21/03 email for examples.

Our friend, Nan, has a jewelry business and donates $5 from the sale of any bracelet or necklace sold on her website when “Marcy” is mentioned in the comments section of the order.

Perform a Personal Service that you feel comfortable doing. Since she can't do it herself, Marcy loves having the Bible read to her.

Conduct a Fundraiser - Some of our friends did this for us in October 2002. It was a tremendous success. Read more about it in our 11/6/02 email.

Participate in our Virtual Fundraiser - Buy something you were going to buy anyway, and the company contributes to Marcy's care.

Recognize a Need - Sometimes you can catch a glimpse of something the family needs just by listening. For example, early in this part of our walk, my parents gave us a massage table after they learned I was giving Marcy massages on the floor. They knew the table would make it more comfortable for Marcy and easier on me.

Bring Groceries - Something Everyone Uses - With no invitation or warning, a neighbor brought by bags of non perishable items: paper towels, toilet paper, and laundry detergent. She said that everybody uses these items and even if we had plenty, they wouldn't go bad. And you know how you have your favorite foods to cook, brands you think provide the best value, and sizes that fit your pantry or refrigerator? We keep a downloadable Wal-Mart and Costco grocery list (a PDF file) online that has our food preferences.

Give knowledge - As you can imagine, I have spent a lot of time on the Internet looking for ideas to help Marcy. But no one can know everything. If you run across something that you think can help, forward it, or better yet, act on it like my parents did when they found out about a respite care program.

Buy some cosmetics - Judy, a friend from church, is also a sales rep for Arbonne natural cosmetics. She has offered, for friends of Marcy, to donate her share of sales to Marcy's care. If you would like to consider helping us by buying cosmetics from Judy, please go to the Arbonne website, pick out the products you want, then email Judy.

Give Joy - Come by for a visit. Tell a joke or funny story. One of our favorite nights was when our next door neighbor brought his guitar and sang some of the songs he has written. He is very good.

Make a prayer quilt - My Aunt Sara and my mother made us a prayer quilt that shows us daily how much we are loved.
